Why I started the "Saving the Honeybees" Initiative

Beekeeper with honeybee frame

Hello, honeybee enthusiasts in Maine and beyond! I want to share why I began this effort, where we stand, and what the future looks like.

As a disabled senior who loves nature, national parks, and the beauty of the natural world — including honeybees — my motivation is rooted in respect and admiration for these incredible creatures. Being on a fixed income, I don't raise bees for profit, but simply as a hobby to honor Mother Nature, watch these amazing insects work, and enjoy some honey for myself and friends.

In 2021, when I decided to turn my hobby into a small side project, everything changed. What was initially 1 to 3 hives growing to 10, after I bought land in central Maine. Around the same time, I began hearing more about the dire situation honeybees face — massive losses in both backyard apiaries and large commercial operations.

This stark reality made me realize how critical pollinator health is, not just for beekeepers, but for our entire ecosystem. Climate change, habitat loss, and pesticides are causing catastrophic declines in honeybees and other pollinators. Their loss is a loss for all of us, affecting our food security and natural environment.

With some farming background and awareness of pollination's importance, I am committed to doing everything I can to help save honeybees and pollinators here in Maine — and everywhere else. Because in saving them, we're also helping ourselves.

Join Us on the Ground Floor

This year I am looking into turning Saving the Honeybees into a 501(c)3 Nonprofit by the end of 2026. I am looking for others who want to get involved on the ground floor of this worthy mission. Drop me a line and tell me why you want to get involved!
