Considering a Switch to Slovenian A-Z Hives

Slovenian style bee house with horizontal hives

After years of working with traditional Langstroth hives, we're exploring a fascinating alternative that's been used in Europe for centuries: the Slovenian A-Z hive system. These unique horizontal hives offer several advantages that could revolutionize how we manage our apiary.

What Makes A-Z Hives Different?

Unlike vertical Langstroth hives that require lifting heavy boxes, A-Z hives are horizontal structures where frames slide in and out from the back. This design is particularly appealing for beekeepers dealing with back problems or physical limitations. The hives can be stacked in attractive "bee houses" that protect colonies from harsh weather while making inspections much easier.

Benefits We're Considering

The A-Z system offers several compelling advantages:

  • Easier Management: No more lifting heavy honey supers. Frames slide out horizontally, making inspections gentler on both beekeeper and bees.
  • Better Winter Protection: The enclosed bee house design provides superior insulation, which could help our colonies survive Maine's brutal winters.
  • Space Efficiency: Multiple colonies can be housed in a single structure, saving space and materials.
  • Reduced Disturbance: You can inspect one colony without disturbing neighboring hives.

The Challenges

Of course, switching systems isn't without challenges. A-Z hives require different equipment and techniques. There's a learning curve, and we'd need to invest in new woodworking skills to build these specialized hives. Additionally, finding mentors or resources for this system in the United States can be difficult, as it's not widely used here.

Our Decision Process

We're taking our time with this decision. We're researching, watching videos from European beekeepers, and considering starting with just one or two A-Z hives as a trial. The potential benefits for our aging backs and our bees' winter survival make this an exciting possibility worth exploring.

What do you think? Have you worked with A-Z hives or other horizontal hive systems? We'd love to hear about your experiences!

Explore different configurations and setups of Slovenian A-Z hives, from traditional bee houses to innovative mobile apiaries.

Closed Hive

Closed Hive

This is a closed stand alone A-Z Hive. Usually they are built into a larger enclosure with other A-Z hives.

This is a 3 level – 1 Brood chamber and 2 honey chambers (in 1 unit) A-Z Hive opened to expose interior look of hive.

Again, 3 levels in 1 unit, open to show how frames slide in and out. No more lifting heavy boxes to get the lower level frames!

Open Hive (2 Level)

Again showing ease of access on this 2 level A-Z hive. This hive has 1 brood chamber and 1 honey chamber.

Active 2 Level Hive

This show an active 2 level A-Z hive from the back door or inspection access.

Slovenian Hive Shelter

Slovenian Hive Shelter

This is a building built for multiple A-Z hives. There is a back door to get into the building to do harvest or do inspections. You can put the hives side-by-side and stack on top of each other. You won't have to lift anything once they are there because of rear access.

A-Z Hives Inside Structure

Here are 3 hives located inside a bit larger hive structure. You can inspect and harvest rain or shine. The building keep the bees warmer and safe from predators.

A Slovenian Hive Truck

A Slovenian Hive Truck

A truck containing a row stacked 3 high on both sides of the truck. Rear entry between rows for the beekeeper to inspect or extract. Great for pollinator services because you can go where the nectar is in season!

A Slovenian Hive Trailer

A Slovenian Hive Trailer

Similar to the Hive Truck. Great for pollination services! You can see the stairs for the beekeeper to get inside behind the hives.
