After moving our hobby apiary from Massachusetts to Maine to grow our operation, our first winter was devastating—we lost over 80% of our 10 hives due to the pollinator crisis and an unusually harsh winter. We nearly gave up, as it was a financial and emotional blow.

Then, unexpectedly, a former classmate from high school, Gregg R., reached out and offered to pay for two packages of bees to help us continue. After sharing our story on Facebook, others also stepped up. Rob K., an old friend, offered to help cover some costs, while neighbors Mark and Ashley S. bought an additional package. Seth S. also contributed to operational costs.

Thanks to this support, we restarted on a smaller scale and survived. That experience inspired me to start "Saving the Honeybees!" We're working towards becoming a 503(c) nonprofit by the end of 2026, with a mission to save and boost pollinator populations in Maine. We also provide beekeeping training, pollinator education at schools, and donations to honeybee research in Maine.
