Our Path to Becoming a Nonprofit

We're on our way to becoming an Official 501(c)3 Non-Profit! It is a process that takes time and effort, but we are working on it!

Regular Black text means we haven't gotten to that one yet, Green Text means that one is completed.

  1. 1Choose a Name: Ensure the name is unique and not already in use. Check availability with the Secretary of State and the USPTO.
  2. 2Assemble a Board of Directors: Maine law requires at least three directors. Select individuals with the necessary skills and experience.
  3. 3File Articles of Incorporation: Submit the required documents to the Maine Secretary of State.
  4. 4Obtain an Employer Identification Number (EIN): Acquire an EIN from the IRS for tax purposes.
  5. 5Apply for Federal Tax Exemption: File IRS Form 1023 or Form 1023-EZ with the IRS to obtain 501(c)(3) status.
  6. 6Apply for State Tax Exemption: File the appropriate forms with the Maine Department of Revenue.
  7. 7Register as a Charitable Organization: Ensure compliance with state regulations and obtain any necessary licenses or permits.

Estimated Timeline

We figure the process will take up to 1 year. By January of 2027, we "should" be an official nonprofit.
